The american is a suspense thriller which george clooney plays jack, an assassin that is always on the move and always alone. After a job in sweden ends in disaster jack then retreats to italy where he contacts his superiors and states that he wants out. Jacks request was granted but was asked to complete one last mission in which he had to construct a weapon for a strange and mysterious Belgian women named Mathilde.

Jack has been ordered to lay low in a small medieval town in italy while the details were arranged for him to begin constructing the weapon. Surprising himself jack becomes friendly with a local priest Father Benedetto and also pursues romance with a local prostitute called clara. Jacks orders have always been to lay low and blend in so to speak and under any circumstance never to become involved in any relationship or make any friends as this could have fatal consequences.

Jack begines to meet the belgian women to ensure the weapon is up to specifications and requirements and they drive to some deserted locations to test out the weapon. While jack is making some final adjustemts to the rifle weapon it is clear that he is not alone in this small town in italy and it soo becomes quite clear that he has a tail. Jack eliminates the tail and soon realizes that it was another agent (assassin) sent to kill him. Jack knows that something is not right and soon realizes that he must end this once and for all.

Not only has jack got to eliminate these other assassins but his relationship with a local prostitute clara gets more serious and so it is clear that he really loves her and wants to spend the rest of his life with her. Jack comes up with a plan and sends clara off to a safe and secure destination while he confronts the other people trying to kill him. He finishes making the weapon and meets and delivers the rifle weapon to Mathilde within the town and then she leaves. Jack has a plan in place as he knows they are trying to kill him for wanting out.

Will jack end up eliminating the people hunting for him? and will he ever see clara again?
