Over the years Steven Soderbergh has directed some of the world’s most outstanding movies and certainly “Contagion” is no exception. This is a truly fantastic movie about what many would feel is one of the grimmest subjects possible. The story is one that revolves around a pandemic that kills millions of people in the USA in just a few months.
As well as being a very serious movie it is also one that is extremely emotional that is highly controlled about an event that no one has control over. Many like me who have already seen this film have founded it very thought provoking and enlightening. It is highly intelligent and as a result is a movie that really does bring things in to focus. You may find yourself leaving this movie slightly shaken but on another level find yourself feeling somewhat relieved as this isn’t a movie with instant melodrama. Instead it is a movie that is willing to confront reality head on.
Both Steven Soderbergh and the screenwriter (Scott Z Burns) had not intended for this movie to become an event that relates to an on-going political debate about the way Americans live their lives.
So just what is Contagion about?
The story relates to Beth Emhoff played by Gwyneth Paltrow who whilst on a night out in Kowloon on a business trip she eats some pork at a restaurant. Then on the way back she has a stop over in Chicago where she sleeps with an old boyfriend before arriving back in Minneapolis to her husband Mitch played by Matt Damon. She then suddenly becomes sick and dies. From the outset no one realizes that what has killed is a new flulike virus and without realizing it she has been passing it on to others she has met during her travels. As a result of this the virus soon spreads rapidly as more people come into contact with those that were initially in contact with Beth.
Of course although we all want to know how Beth became infected it isn’t until the end of the movie that we found out how it happened. What really makes this particular so scary and so real is the fact that Gwyneth Paltrow’s character wasn’t making her way through the jungle when she contracted the virus but was visiting one of the world’s most cosmopolitan places.
As the movie progresses the paranoia felt finally reaches it logical end point and shows how every day things are actually what finally leads to our contracting the virus as well. Although a very serious movie there is one moment of light relief during it. The scene involves a teenage boy and girl trying to get intimate and it shows them wriggling side by side in the snow. Her father pulls then when the boy finally does to make a move and roll onto the girl to give her a kiss he off her.
Despite what you may have heard from Soderbergh in the interviews given about Contagion this isn’t so much a disaster movie, but more like a thriller. As you watch this movie it jumps very quickly from one location to another with everything happening at once that was very much a feature of Steven Soderbergh’s other movie “Traffic”.
Okay the techniques used to provide tension in this movie may be somewhat conventional, but have been used by Soderbergh’s in such a way that is better than I have seen used by another director in recent years. Plus of course the use of such stars as Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne and Matt Damon are what help me to remain fascinated with this movie as the gruesome story unfolded.
Without leaning too much on the obvious “Contagion” is a movie that helps to evoke memories in many of us about how we felt when HIV and Ebola were discovered. Certainly we were all baffled and outraged by these viruses and felt completely helpless with how to tackle them.
Yet even though there is every opportunity for Steven Soderbergh’s to make “Contagion” into a horror movie he has chosen not to. As a result by choosing to do the story straight it helps to make what is happening on the scree in front feel more real and much scarier.
